I have terrific memories of The Bun Drive-In, not the least of which are “The Battle of the Bands”, where a band performed on-the-roof, on either side of “The Royal Roost”.
Ron Moore, “The Royal Coachman”, had a 5ft. x 5ft. broadcast booth built on the front-center of the roof where he broadcast “The Coke Show” on KENI, live in the early evening. In the summer, bands would play while Ron was on-the-air, and customers would “vote” for their favorite band with their car horns. The band I played with, “The Nomads”, won many of those band battles. Ron’s black 1957 Chevrolet with its Demons Car Club plaque in the back window was often admired.
I also remember driving up to the front of the building with another drummer, Jim Loman, in his red Isetta, and jumping out the front door of that crazy little car, which freaked people out … and/or cracked them up.
Finally, I remember holding hands with my girlfriend, Patti, many times in that parking lot. Next month we’ll celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary.
